Christmas Cards
The internet has been around since the Second World War, and from its inception it’s been used almost exclusively by the military. Since the early to mid 1990s, it’s non-military use and popularity exploded. This was hugely instigated by the availability of the personal computer rather than the in the past where the internet was made possible by the military’s use of computers that were the size of rooms.
So here we are about ten to fifteen years since the fulminant use of the internet and we used to hear every year the prediction of the death of the old world economy. Yet, in this era of the new economy, we do not see the demise of printed Christmas cards. Despite the availability of free online Christmas cards, people are still attracted to the printed version, probably because it has a more human feel to it.
A rudimentary search on Google returned the following data on the number of sites offering the categories of Christmas cards:
- free online Christmas card - 6,910,000
- business Christmas card - 4,140,000
- photo Christmas card - 4,620,000
- personalized Christmas card - 260,000
These figures indicate the growing need for people to express themselves differently than the crowd, who are more keen on either saving money or the environment by using free online Christmas cards. The categories other than the free online one, offer cards at significantly higher prices than those we could buy in regular bookstores or churches.
This Christmas let’s think about whether we ought to be frugal and use electronic Christmas Cards or the printed types to express ourselves.
