Religious Intelorance
I’m amused when I read the antics of secular fools who ban some Christian symbol being used in public because it supposedly is offensive to those of other religions. Yesterday, I once again started my day with a dose of another ticklish piece of news. It’s amazing that these foolish and livid episodes occur before and during a Christian festival.
This time it was a case of a school that barred the Easter bunny. Anyway the Easter bunny is not a Christian symbol as such but is associated with Easter. The school superintendent suggested Peter Rabbit be the substitute. The reason for the ban of the Easter bunny was because the superintendent recently became aware of non-Christian people.
I live in Malaysia, a country in which just above 50% of the inhabitants are Muslims. There is a healthy percentage of Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. In the 200 years that all of us have lived together in this land, no religion has shied away from living its faith openly. The Muslims (of course) don’t mute their call to prayer because the decibel level is high and could be annoying to the non-Muslims. The non-Muslims have just come to accept this as a fact of life in a majority Muslim country. We don’t consider the open display of Islam uncomfortable to us. The Hindus, Buddhists and the Christians too are not ashamed to celebrate their festivities blatantly.
The episode with the superintendent above is akin to a non-practicing Muslim in Malaysia instigating the banning of Islamic practices in public. I’m actually assuming that the superintendent is a non-practicing Christian. He could even be an atheist who disapproves of the Christian heritage of the US just as the Europeans of the EU.
I’m glad that the US Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, is defending the Second Amendment and interpreting it differently from the activist judges. As Christians we shouldn’t be amazed at the state of the animosity being shown towards Christianity. Christ himself prepared us for this and said that the world will hate us for being his followers. We should be honored that we are being persecuted all over the world and given the privilege of participating in Christ’s humiliation.
