Defection from Catholicism

This was news to me, that there is a formal procedure to adhere to, to defect from the Catholic Church.
These are the steps necessary:
- the individual decision to leave the Church
- the act of leaving the Church
- the documentation of that decision by the Church.
Although this may be documented formally, the Church still recognizes the individual’s permanent, sacramental bond conferred at baptism that links the person to Jesus Christ.
