Mother Mary & World Peace
Today is both the feast of Mary Mother of God and World Day of Peace. It’s apropos that two events are celebrated on the same day as both are interrelated. No Mary, no peace.
At Our Lady’s apparition at Guadalupe, she addressed herself as the “Mother of the True God”. At her apparitions at Fatima, she asked for prayers for world peace. Mother Mary’s appearances always brought peace in various ways either to the people in the vicinity, the country or region of the apparition or even world wide. Even the Fatima apparitions brought peace world wide but 70 years later with the collapse of the USSR, through the prayers of millions of people as advocated by Our Lady herself.
Mother Mary ought to be our exemplar of Peace. Throughout scripture the few references of Our Lady indicate that she was a person filled with peace even with the 7 Sorrows she had to endure. Nowhere can we find any indication that she was flustered or agitated during the sorrowful events that she experienced. She is a model for all Christians on how to behave in a peaceful way while evil is going about its activity. Note that Mother Mary didn’t berate or react violently towards the members of the Sanhedrin, the Roman soldiers, the crowd that jeered Jesus on His way to Calvary or the foul mouthed thief crucified with Him.
A mother in a human family is the intercessor among children and between children and father. Jesus himself gave us His mother to be our Mother, i.e., to be our intercessor between us and Him.
So we should seek the help of the Mother of God to bring peace to us individually, in the family, our workplace, our neighbourhood, city, state, nation and world. Catholics have several prayer tools at our disposal - rosary, novena and feast days of Mary.
