Adam’s Folly
I have read the entire Bible twice in my life from over to cover and yet when I read the daily bible passages, many new lessons and new thoughts spring up occasionally.
Today is one of those days. Today’s reading from Genesis 2:4b-9,15-17, made me see the creation story in a new light. God had made two special trees in Eden, one was the “Tree of Life” and the other, the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”.
Why did God tell Adam not to eat from the latter only? Does this mean that Adam was free to eat from the Tree of Life? My thoughts are that the Tree of Life signifies total obedience to God, therefore giving us eternal life, just as the Tree of Knowledge makes us believe wrongly that we are God resulting in mortality. Why didn’t God use reverse psychology on Adam and command him not to eat of the Tree of Life instead? We would all live forever and not be scouting for the elixir of life as this week’s issue of Fortune Magazine reports of a new substance with the potential to actually lengthen life.
The phrase, “O necessary fault of Adam”, will have a new meaning from this year’s Holy Week celebrations.
