Wine is Good

Tag:, ,

There are some Evangelical Christians who are teetotalers because they think it’s a sin to drink any kind of alcohol. Many, if not most Protestant congregations even use grape juice during their communion rather than wine.

St. Paul in 1 Tim 5:23 actually advises Timothy to drink some wine for his health and not just water. Note that St. Paul is treating wine as food and we know that the right food is nutritious and life giving. St. Paul didn’t have a problem with wine.

Let’s move back to the Last Supper, which was actually the First Eucharist. Jesus had no qualms using wine that he changed in His Blood. It would be safe to assume that He would have had wine regularly with His meals.
Move back even further to the event that set Jesus on the path to His ministry - the wedding at Cana. He turned water into wine. Would He have done something evil, if wine is actually evil? Definitely not. God doesn’t perform evil deeds.

So if God doesn’t condemn wine why should Christians consider it an abomination? Once again it is misguided interpretation without the help of the Holy Spirit.

So let’s be joyful and follow in the footsteps of our Lord and his Apostle and drink wine in moderation, just as we are encouraged to consume all food in moderation.
