The Temptation of Jesus

Tag:, ,

I found some verses from this Sunday’s Gospel reading from Lk. 4:1-13. amusing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not belittling the seriousness of the Devil’s deviousness.

The first amusing verses were 5-7. Lucifer claims that the world has been given to him and that he has been authorized to bequeath it to anyone who worships him. I’m tickled that the Devil being so intelligent, is so dumb to actually lie to God Himself. What was he thinking? That God wouldn’t know the truth? My theory is that Lucifer actually believes his own lies. The master of deceit deceives himself! If he successfully deceives himself and his fellow fallen angels, imagine how much easier it will be to trip up weaker spirits as humans.

I also find verse 9 enlivening. The verse in The Jerusalem Bible says that the devil led Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and “set him on the parapet”. How did the Devil set Jesus on the parapet? I picture Lucifer carrying Jesus in his arms to the top. Imagine the creature carrying in his arms his hated Creator. We could be tempted to see this as being sweet of the Devil. The Devil is always sweet as he attempts to destroy us.
