The Secret - Compatible with Christian Teaching? #1

Tag:, , , , ,

I have finally bought the book, The Secret authored by Rhonda Byrne. For the past one year I’ve heard of this book being bandied about and promoted by numerous personal development trainers.

Well curiousity has got the better of me. After just reading a few pages of the book, I’m definitely going to get The Secret Movie as well.

A few months ago, I read an article on the Catholic Exchange critiquing the lessons from The Secret as some New Age mumbo jumbo. Well I decided to do my own study of this book and examine it against Catholic teachings, specifically those in the Bible. I’m going to do this lesson by lesson.

What exactly is the secret in The Secret? Well the secret is the Law of Attraction. It says that if you think positive thoughts and have positive desires, then you will attarct more of the same and your life will change. Naturally the same law applies to negative thoughts, feelings and actions.

What does Jesus teach us? When we analyze Jesus’ teachings, He consistently taught us to think positively. He always criticized people who had negative thoughts, desires and actions. Recall how He told Peter to sheath his sword and scolded some Pharisees who wanted to trick Him.

God Himself knows that positive thinking drives positive things to materialize. From this perspective, I strongly believe the Law of Attraction is congruent with Catholic teachings.

What do you think?
