Sexualization Harms
The Catholic Church has been teaching for millenia to be modest in dress and to be chaste throughout our life. The Church has known of the harm caused by such destructive behaviours and has been unwavering. Unfortunately not all her own members and not a few of her priests too have shunned away from preaching and living according to these requirements. The world however prefer to sexualise everything it can lay it’s hand on asĀ it is more sexy (pun intended) than following the boring advise the Church.
Today the BBC reported on the warning issued by the American Psychological Association of the harm that befalls girls’ when women are depicted as sex objects. The consequences include both mental and physical deterioration.
It would be interesting to monitor the development, among the media owners, from this article. The media moguls in the US have been resisting an embargo on profane language on their channels as they feel it impinges on free expression. Would these people challenge these findings of a secular, scientific organisation?
The Asssociation also included counter measures to prevent deterioration in the health of young girls:
- schools should teach media literacy skills
- governments should reduce sexualised images on media
- media should show girls in positive settings.
We are familiar with the adage, that beauty is not skin deep, but our media owners and employees definitely don’t agree - it’s all about skin.
