Rearrange the Heavens

Tag:, ,

One of Time Magazine’s recent issues was dedicated to efforts that we can employ to save the Earth from destruction due to environmental issues. One of the ideas that we could apprarently apply is to “rearrange the heavens”.

This isn’t an April’s Fool joke. This is Plan B to end carbon emisssions if current plans fail. This field of reengineering the atmosphere is known as Geoengineering. And there are serious people considering such a mind-challenging idea.

I would have thought that the Wise Old Man in the sky who created the heavenly bodies as accounted in Genesis, knew what He was doing. Now according to these scientists, He didn’t really know that global warming would eventually destroy the Earth and that the atmosphere He created lacked sufficient amounts of sulfur to cool the Earth. Moreover, He didn’t realize that the sun was actually bad for the Earth and so its rays need to be deflected elsewhere.

All these sound like a nightmare about to be released onto unsuspecting Earthlings by malicious aliens. Seems like we haven’t learnt much from our experiences and presumptious thoughts of not too long ago. It wasn’t too long ago that we thought that the world would be overpopulated and several countries legislated small families. Now these same countries are lamenting their imbalanced demograhics. Not too long ago too, we thought the way out of unwanted pregnancies was to introduce contraception. Now we suffer from infidelity and empty relationships.

What will this geoengineering effort come to? More acid rain maybe? Failing crops too and famine? Human pride makes it difficult for us to just control our own actions and decide upon imposing our ideas onto others. If each one of us do our part to hop off the road of materialism, we should be able to achieve far more than these half-baked ideas that are unleashed by people who refuse to submit to the God’s providence.

Geoengineering will not eliminate the problem as it’s only treating the symptoms. Global warming to a large extent is played by people in the industrialized economies who refuse to give up on our comforts. This is Economics 101 - Supply and Demand. Commercial organizations manufacture what is demanded by the populace. We need to reeducate the people that they are committing suicide and that they need to return to being responsible stewards as God commanded us to be. This is the role of evangelization too.
