Earth - Work in Progress
I just completed reading a book by James Sloman titled, Nothing. It’s a book teaching us how to discover our true nature.
In chapter 24 of the book, Sloman brings up the issue of people who are attached to saving the world. Sloman says that the world doesn’t need saving as it is already perfect.
As Catholics, our belief is that although God is perfect, He never made anything perfect, except Mother Mary and the heavenly spirits, who are perfect in their decisions.
God made Earth as work in progress. Science itself teaches that when the Big Bang happened, the universe was in chaos. In fact when the Earth was formed, it was itself in a state of flux. It was unfit for life and it took millions of years before God created plants and animals and eventually humans.
My challenge is that if the world is in fact imperfect, then it needs to be saved from destruction from the carelessness of other humans. God, in Genesis, told us to be stewards. The job of a steward is to nurture and you can only nourish something that is capable of change - therefore imperfect.
What is your opinion on this?
