Doomsday Clock

Tag:, ,

The Doomsday Clock has been advanced another 2 minutes and the time now shows it’s 5 minutes to Midnight. Midnight is of course when the world ends. This clock has been adjusted closer and back from Midnight several times since its inception in 1947. The closest has been 3 minutes to Doom in 1984. These scientists who administer this clock now warn that Apocalypse is at our doorstep once again.

What does the Catholic religion teach us about such prophesies? Firstly, let’s recall the words of Jesus who said no one knows when the world will end. Jesus further said that when wars happen, it’s still not the end of times (MT 24:6, MK 13:7, LK 21:9). Therefore, we have to interpret Jesus’ words as meaning that prophesies such as the Doomsday Clock are mere hot air.

Statements such as the Doomsday scientists are the rantings of people who have no clue as to the existence of God or at the other extreme who believe in a maniac God. Fr. Paul O’Sullivan, O.P. (E.D.M.), the author of “All About The Angels”, mentions that God has appointed Guardian Angels for each body in the universe. This explains why major meteors, ala Jurassic & Triassic times, hasn’t struck Earth since humans were created. This too is why nuclear weapons or ecological disasters will not destroy the Earth.

This doesn’t exempt humans from our responsibility to be good stewards as God commanded Adam. We have to care for God’s property. God’s original purpose was for a just world which was hijacked by Satan with the help of his human cronies. Thus rather than the current world being destroyed it could actually be renewed and ultimately become the original world that God intended. Thus this is the journey initiated by Adam and Eve after being expelled from Eden - to return to Eden.
