My five-year old son has been using the computer and internet for the past month now under our supervision. His favorite (and only) website that he spends daily time on is the Disney Playhouse Channel. He loves visiting this site more than watching the channel on TV, simply because the website is interactive but the TV is passive.
As Halloween is round the corner, Disney has also added activities around this theme. So on Sunday last, my son pestered me to help him create Halloween paraphernalia that required him to print some pictures, color them and paste onto a hand made door hanger. After I’d helped him create this, I was disappointed as I felt that I was leading him the wrong path as a Catholic parent.

I discussed with my wife and we decided that we shall not let Disney or any other secular site coerce us to celebrate Halloween in an unChristian way. In fact Halloween is not even a Church sanctioned feast day, it’s merely the vigil before the feast. The following day of course is. If we want to celebrate it we should hijack it from the secular world and Christianize it.

After viewing this website, I’ve decided to redo the door hanger I created for my son with a more Catholic feel. Maybe I shall also carve the Jack O’ Lanterns with a cross rather than a scary image.
