Apologize
My younger son reached the age of five last November and he has always sat at the back seat of the car together with his mother whenever we drive anywhere while his older brother who is 15 sits in front. Things changed since December 2007, when Jason, the younger one, would race his older brother, Jared, to sit in the front passenger seat. To avoid any unneccesary conflict and bring peace to my mind, I’ve decided that they take turns to sit in front, on the forward journey, one boy and on the return the other. Seems to be working.
Yesterday, after visitng my parents, which I normally do on Sundays, Jason was up in front with me in the car and the song Apologize by One Republic came on the air. Part of the chorus went like this - “It’s too late to apologize…” Jason asked why it was too late to apologize.
I proceeded to answer that it was probably too late because the damage had been done. Then I realized the stupidity of what I had said and explained that as Christians it’s never too late to apologize, no matter the severity of the act we have committed. We should apologize if we have done a wrong but it’s upto the person we offended whether they want to forgive.
I then explained that God always wants us to apologize (ask for forgiveness) no matter when the trespass was done or how mortal it was. And He will always forgive us our sins.
What a coincidence that today’s Gospel reading Mk3:22-30 actually records Jesus saying exactly this, with the caveat that the only sin unforgiveable is that against the Holy Spirit.
